Shani Dev is the Hindu god of karma, justice, and retribution, and the divine personification of the planet Saturn. People fear Shani Dev because he acts as the strict, impartial enforcer of karma and dharma, delivering exact consequences for human actions during life rather than waiting for the afterlife.
